In their research for the drawing up of Aesop Glasgow, our in-house design team was struck by the contrast between the refined and the rough in the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Arts. Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and completed in 1909, the ‘Mack’ continues to be an icon of a particularly Glaswegian Art Nouveau style, despite having been moderately and then significantly damaged by fire in 2014 and 2018. Aesop’s designers were drawn to early-20th-century photographs of internal staircases and students’ ateliers—spaces that eschewed ornament and were designed with functionality in mind—with their exposed and somewhat disorderly electrical wiring and sculptures-in-progress presented on makeshift plinths. They admired the thoughtful use of humble materials such as timber, concrete and tiles, and the way the spaces exude warmth despite their starkness.

Occupying a modest lot on Ingram Street, Aesop Glasgow is a place of austere materials and muted atmosphere. The intention was to leave the shell of the unit untouched and to define the space with a straight-forward attitude and minimal intervention. Reclaimed parquetry lines the floor while a curved partition envelops visitors in our full range of formulations for the skin, hair, body and home. In the centre of the room, a generous communal basin echoes forms found in Mackintosh’s idiosyncratic architecture. Here, customers can receive tailored advice about—and a tactile introduction to—products that meet their individual needs. Tucked away to one side, behind a curtain, a cloistered personal basin affords privacy and the possibility of more in-depth consultations. Back in the main room, on the plush vintage sofa, visitors can rest awhile and muse.

A shelf dedicated to our unconventional Eaux de Parfum allows customers to compare each fragrance and discern their preference. At the nearby Infusion Chamber, an item of clothing can be imbued with a chosen aroma—a vestige of the sensory experience to accompany one through the rest of their day.
